Architecture of the Centre Pompidou inspired the Air Max range
The Nike Air Vapormax has a long history, going back to 1987. 30 years ago, lead designer Tinker Hatfield laid the foundations for the product range with the Air Max 1. Today's models are characterised by constant visual and above all – technological and in many cases innovative – optimisation stages. Inspired by the architectural glory of the legendary Centre Pompidou, Tinker Hatfield designed the Air Max 1 with a visibly functional sole and bold colour combinations. All other models
– up to the Nike Air Vapormax – are based on precisely this concept. The focus is on optimisation of material, shape, colour combination and elements. Nike Air Vapormax: Functional and visual optimisation characterise the entire model range. The Air Max 180 was the next to be launched, designed by Tinker Hatfield and also Bruce Kilgore, the creator of the Nike Air Force 1. This shoe had optimised padding in the midsole and outsole; the dynamics and wearing comfort of the shoe were also improved. This model achieved global recognition status with the visible air cushions in the sole. The new Nike Vapormax also has this visual feature. In the following model, Air Max 93, the air sole underwent more visual changes, the designers claiming to have been inspired by plastic milk jugs.
Vapormax models set new standards in visuals and comfort
After the Air Max 95 and Air Max 97, the next model was the Air Max 360, and Nike designers came close to their goal of having the wearer practically walk on air. During subsequent years, the legendary Air Max models were reissued several times before Nike's current launch of the Nike Air Vapormax, optimally combining lightness, dynamics, comfort and visual appeal.
